WHAT: This is a workshop in wood type letterpress printing in the Graphics Print Area. You will cover Health & Safety, choosing a typeface, typesetting, using the press, preparing inks, printing techniques and cleaning your equipment and the area.

Please note that you will not be allowed to use the Print Area for Letterpress or Letterpress equipment until you have completed an induction.

WHEN: Thursday 2nd February

WHERE: The Graphics Print Area (room 205b)

SMALL PRINT: Please wear sensible flat shoes and old clothes. If you have long hair please bring a hairband for when you are using the press.

If you sign-up and fail to attend without giving Rose notice you will be given a warning, after two warnings you will not be allowed to sign-up for any workshops for 4 weeks, please avoid this by canceling your place on the workshops blog and emailing Rose rthomas.s1(at)ucreative.ac.uk if there are any problems.

In this workshop you will learn the basics of making your own books, whether to use as sketchbooks, or as a form for your creative intentions.

The workshop will cover basic book formats and book blocks – pamphlet, concertina, japanese stab binding and making simple hard covers.

Once you know the basics, you will then have the skills to be more creative with the book as well as progress to more skillful and professional looking books.

Materials you will need

Bookbinding needle – size 18 *
Bookbinders linen thread *
Bone folder *
Cutting board
Sharp scalpel / craft knife, with spare blades
Metal ruler
Set square – ideally metal
Pencil
scissors
Bookbinders awl or bodkin – alternatively a sharp compass point or dart!
2 bulldog clips
PVA Glue or spreadable gum / paste – no glue sticks please!
Large glue brush or glue spreader *
Scrap paper / greaseproof or waxy paper
Grey Board – A4 sized sheet
Cover paper / sugar paper 220gsm approx
Lightweight cover paper / wrapping paper / decorative paper of approx 80/100gsm
1 x A1 sheet of cartridge paper
